Vehicle Classes - What they are and how they work.
Each vehicle is rated according to its Class. The class is always shown on your policy so shy not check to see if it is correct.
CLASS 01
a) Pleasure use only.
b) Principal Operator: Age 25 or over.
c) No occasional male driver under age 25 unless 06 charge is made.
d) No occasional female driver under 25 years of age unless an 05 charge is made.
e) No more than two drivers per automobile and each has been licensed for the past
three years unless the third operator is an underage female or underage male where an
05 or 06 charge has been applied.
f) Driven not more than 18,000 kilometers per year
g) No driving for professional or vocational purposes.
h) Driving to and from work within 5 kms. each way is permitted.
NOTE - Do you have a young driver living at home? If you do, please see class 05 and 06 below for more information on how teens are added to the policy so they are insured while driving your vehicle. Any vehicle that is rated 01, 02, 03, or 07 is handled in this way.
CLASS 02
a) Pleasure use only.
b) Principal Operator: Age 25 or over.
c) No occasional male driver under age 25 unless 06 charge is made.
d) No occasional female driver under 25 years of age unless an 05 charge is made.
e) Not more than two drivers per automobile in the household unless the third operator
is an underage female or underage male where an 05 or 06 charge has been made.
f) Driving to or from work within 20 road kilometers is permitted.
CLASS 03
a) Pleasure.
b) Principal Operator: Age 25 or over.
c) No occasional male driver under age 25, unless an 06 charge is being made.
d) No occasional female driver under age 25, unless an 05 charge is being made.
No driving to and from work limit is given here. This class applies to drivers who drive more than 20 kms to work.
Note - The first three classes are primarily based on the amount of driving that you do to get to work, and the distance driven each year. The less you use your vehicle the less you pay. These variables are not used to in the other classes listed below.
Class 05 and 06 are used to add underage drivers to your policy. These classes are used when the principle driver is not underage. Underage drivers may be deemed to be principle operators in some cases. This largely depends on the number of vehicles in the household.
CLASS 05
Female occasional operator under 25 where the principal operator is rated Class 01, 02,
03 or 07.
CLASS 06
Male occasional operator under 25 where the principal operator is rated Class 01, 02, 03
or 07.
NOTE:
1. The 05 or 06 rate will be shown under the “Endorsement” section of the policy.
2. Chargeable accidents or conviction surcharges of any of the under age 25 occasional
operators will be applied to these ratings.
MULTIPLE 05 or 06/SINGLE AUTOMOBILE
Where there is only one automobile in the household and more than one under age 25
occasional operator, charge only one Class 05 or 06 premium for whichever driver
generates the greater premium.
MULTIPLE 05 or 06/MULTIPLE AUTOMOBILES
Where there is more than one automobile in the household, the number of 05 or 06
charges should equal the number of automobiles or the number of such operators,
whichever is the lesser.
SINGLE 05 or 06 OPERATOR/MULTIPLE AUTOMOBILES
Where there is only one under age 25 occasional operator and more than one automobile
in the household, charge the Class 05 or 06 on the highest rated automobile.
IN ALL CASES WHERE THERE IS A VEHICLE AVAILABLE FULL TIME FOR
THE USE OF AN OCCASIONAL OPERATOR, PRINCIPAL OPERATOR RATES
MUST APPLY TO THAT VEHICLE.
CLASS 07
a) Business or business and pleasure.
b) Principal Operator: Age 25 or over.
c) No occasional male driver under age 25 unless an 06 charge is being made.
d) No occasional female driver under age 25 unless an 05 charge is being made.
CLASS 08
Principal Operator: Married male under age 21, residing with spouse.
CLASS 09
Principal Operator: Married male age 21 to 24, residing with spouse. Some companies allow 24 year old males to be rated as experienced drivers. (Class 01,02,03, and 07)
CLASS 10
Principal Operator: Single male age 16, 17 or 18.
CLASS 11
Principal Operator: Single male age 19 or 20.
CLASS 12
Principal Operator: Single male 21 or 22.
CLASS 13
Principal Operator: Single male 23 or 24. Some companies allow 24 year old males to be rated as experienced drivers. (Class 01,02,03, and 07)
CLASS 18
Principal Operator: Female, under age 21.
CLASS 19
Principal Operator: Female age 21 to 24. Some companies allow 24 year old females to be rated as experience driver's. (Class 01 etc.)
Classes are not the only thing that determine your premium. Experience, accidents, and driving infractions also play a part in determining your premium.

Caring for a car is not as easy as caring for a two-wheeled vehicle. Especially if you always routinely use the car to drive long distances or close distances.
